Knitting on MLK Day

As always GCW will be facilitating knitting activities on Martin Luther King (MLK) Day. As of now the only location that is hosting a knitting session is at Freeport High School, Maine, at 9:00am in the morning on January 18th. If anyone would like to set-up a knitting group on MLK Day we would love to have your help. It's a great way to have members of the community get out there and get involved. If you need supplies please contact us and let us know and we'll try our best to help. Happy holidays and keep knitting everyone!

Welcome Back!

At the end of the last school year Grace finished an entire blanket with her school, Packer, in Brooklyn, NY. There were dozens of contributors throughout the community who helped, knit, donate wool, and sew together the completed squares. Thank you so much for all of your support, and we hope to be even more successful this year!

A big thanks to the Freeport Maine's Elder's Association who just sent GCW yet another huge donation of wool yarn. We appreciate all the help and support you've given us over the years!

Second Graders Help GCW

Over the course of three weeks Charlie taught a group of second graders in Freeport, Maine how to knit. With the help of the class teacher and a few other parents, Charlie was able to teach 16 second graders how to knit. Charlie spent the first day talking a bit about Afghanistan and what life is like for children there. The students listened and were excited to help GCW by knitting their very own square. At first the students were discouraged and had difficulty knitting, but by the end of the first day (45 minutes) almost everyone was becoming
confident in their knitting abilities.
Each second grader managed to finish their square by the end
of three weeks. They were all proud of their work and they loved seeing their squares sewn into our most recent blanket.

Thanks Packer

So, after just introducing GCW to the 11th grade at Packer, we have already received 4 squares from the students! GCW would like to thank everyone who is participating and everyone who is enthusiastically learning how to knit. Right now, our Brooklyn branch is working on getting more supplies, but we would like to encourage everyone to donate both needles and yarn (100% wool!). Once again, thank you- and keep up the good work!
